Sue,
that is pretty controversial. Nothing in this world comes isolated from every other influence. Strictly speaking it has been even harder to demonstrate an effect of BSE on breast cancer mortality than mammography. However I would never suggest abandoning BSE. For a start it empowers. But by itself it could create a false sense of reassurance. No lump (or lady) should be ignored and it may take a combination of different techniques to demonstrate exactly what is going on. Also technology keeps changing which makes it difficult to evaluate accurately.

Life has been a lot easier for women with breast cancer caught early (small) than what we used to see. It is very unusual to see a large cancer these days.

Sue,
perhaps this is a good place to draw people's attention to journalist Sandra Martin's account of her experiences with her breast cancer ("The ABCs of Breast Cancer" Globe and Mail Saturday October 8 F1). If anything this underscores the fact that everywoman's experiences are unique.
