The Brreast Views Blog: Breast Milk Marketing

It appears - maybe - perhaps - that breast feeding is gaining popularity and heck - becoming cool!

Take Will Ferrell's breast pump accessory at the Golden Globes - carried so his wife could slip away and pump milk for the couples newborn. Or the amount of ink gossip mags are lending to celebrity breast feeders.

Read all about it by clicking on this link: Breast Milk Marketing

The Breast Views Blog: Cool Women

I shall slightly stray from my breast focus for just a moment to introduce you to this site:Cool Women:about the history of women and girls in Canada.

Once on the site, click on the Cool Stories link and read about Sheila Watt-Cloutier. Known for "revealing the human face of climate change in the Arctic - From toxins in breast milk to the relationship between climate and human rights, Sheila Watt-Cloutier brings the urgent issues in Inuit communities to every one of us."

On February 1, Ms. Watt-Cloutier was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

The Breast Views Blog: BrCa1 and BrCa 2 Genetic Testing

It is estimated that about 6 - 10% of all breast cancer is genetic in origin - hence your increased risk if someone else in your family has the disease.

But did you know that scientists have isolated mutations on several breast and ovarian cancer-causing genes and that it is possible to be tested for the mutations?

Question is, would you want to know?

The following link leads to a four part story by a young woman who faces this question after learning that her mom has tested positive for BRCA1.

The Breast Views Blog: Breast Cancer and Pesticides

Despite our city being blanketed in snow and our temperatures dipping into the double digit minus department, the cosmetic pesticide people are gearing up for spring. I've had three calls from 'Weed People' in the last week.

For me it's obvious. If you put poison on your property then you've got poisoned property. As a result, I'm off the phone in the time it takes to say NO thanks!

Its no wonder this story caught my eye. "Susan Teitelbaum, assistant professor in the department of community medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, and colleagues recently completed a study looking at the effects of household pesticides on breast-cancer risk among women on Long Island."

The Breast Views Blog: Moobs

The Breast Views Blog: Get Your Foundations Straight

I know this to be a common mistake. The average person thinks that there is only one charity dealing in cancer/breast cancer fundraising called something like the Breast Cancer Society Foundation. In reality there are hundreds of different charities and charity chapters that are distinct and independent of each other.

The Canadian Cancer Society is not the same as the Breast Cancer Society of Canada. If you're wondering why I'm pointing this out, check yesterday's blog post AND click on this link. Click Here.

The Breast Views Blog: Don't Reject Money From 'Exotic Dancers For Cancer' - Commentary

Well then. Given that the universal qualifier for getting breast cancer is breast ownership, and given the on going plea from breast cancer foundations to give, give, give for the cause, cause, cause, this story is interesting and shamefully familiar.

The Breast Views Blog: Cosmetics, Chemicals, and Your Health

The Environmental Working Group have been busy little Valentines.

I know this will seem hard to believe but look what they've discovered......

"A major loophole in federal law allows fragrance manufacturers to hide potentially hazardous chemicals in product scents, including substances linked to allergies, birth defects, and even cancer. Because they won't tell you what's in the scents they sell you, we combed through thousands of Valentine's Day gift ideas to bring you products that not only smell great, but that are also free of hidden, potentially hazardous fragrances."

Thank you EWG. Click on the link below for more details.

The Breast Views Blog: Dead Bra Day

A couple of weeks ago, Cheryl Rossi, staff writer for the Vancouver Courier called me to inquire about the origin of Dead Bra Day. When I told her that I made up the date and then published it in the Breast of Canada Calendar, I expected that the interview would be over - this based on previous experience.

Instead, Cheryl's interest was aroused and a lengthy, very fun and exhaustive interview followed.

The link: Busting Out, takes you to the result of that interview - and as it turns out, a very comprehensive and interesting story.

Oh yah - Dead Bra Day is February 13th. Bring out yer Dead Bras and set your pups free!!!

The Breast Views Blog: The Lactivist

This morning I read a story in my subscription to Salon.com with the cheeky headline - If Breasts Could Talk. In this particular case, The Lactivist is the one doing the talking.

The Lactivist is an on-line bootstrapper/blogger/breast feeding activist who is funny and I suspect somewhat fierce in her breast feeding advocacy.

And she's got cool swag - like tee's for tots that claim "My Kid Sucks".

Go here to read the Salon Story.

TheBreast Views Blog: Silicone Breast Implants

When I read something like this:

"Percentages of complications arising from breast implants are high, but women don't seem to mind, placing their beauty over health. Allergan records reveal that within fours years after the cosmetic surgery, 41 percent of first-time patients experienced complications. In addition, 23 percent experienced rupture, pain, swelling, hardening, scarring, and other problems that required another operation. Complete replacement of the implants was as high as 57 percent."

All I can do is wonder why would you do something like this to yourself?
